That grocery was first rented and then purchased by Joseph Impastato, who in 1920 opened a tavern in a side room.

In keeping the tradition alive, almost a century later, opera and classical music is played at Napoleon House. Nicholas Girod did not have any children but his extended family lived in the house through the nineteenth century. In the early 1900's the property was owned by a few different people and it eventually became a grocery store. He even offered his home at 500 Chartres Street as a residence for Bonaparte. The couple's reception featured a multi-course sit-down dinner in lieu of a buffet. "People really love to do a buffet in New Orleans for weddings. We're just not really buffet people. I want to sit there and be lazy and have someone bringing [the food]," she tells PEOPLE. "So we did a sit-down dinner. We coursed it out and offered good, Southern New Orleans food."

Over the years, the property transitioned from a residence to a variety of commercial uses. In 1914, it was purchased by the Impastato family, and under the ownership of J. Impastato, affectionately known as Uncle Joe, the building evolved into the iconic Napoleon House restaurant and bar. "Uncle Joe," as they called him, felt the need to create some ambiance in the store, and brought down his Victrola to play some opera records for the customers.

The actress, who says she was determined to be "overdressed and fabulous" all weekend long, wore a custom Christian Siriano gown for the welcome party, accessorized with antique jewelry, for the occasion. "That's how I've always wanted to traipse the streets of New Orleans at night — in a serious gown with a drink in hand, just walking around," she explains. Attached to a two-story structure his brother had built, Girod’s new building stood three stories. With plain walls of stuccoed brick, it lacks the classical molding and other ornamentation popular at the time. The showiest elements on its façade are shallow, second-floor balconies, which boast modest wrought-iron railings. If you’ve ever wondered what visiting the Haunted Mansion would be like if they poured a mean brandy milk punch, head to Napoleon House. This French Quarter landmark is over two centuries old and looks every year of it, with peeling paint, creaky wooden furniture, and lots of old portraits with eyes that follow you around the room. Napoleon abdicated in April 1814 — the very same month of Girod’s inheritance — although he wasn’t shipped to St. Helena then. Back then, Napoleon was imprisoned on the remote island of St. Helena, but, the story goes, a group of sympathetic Frenchmen hatched a plan to rescue him — with help from some amenable pirates — and deliver him to New Orleans to live out his golden years.

On September 4th, one year into his second term, Girod resigned as Mayor due to financial troubles. The people of New Orleans then learned that Napoleon escaped the island of Elba on March 1, 1815, but was recaptured and sent to Ste. Before the Grod and the other Napoleon supporters could execute their supposed plot, Bonaparte died in captivity on May 5, 1821.

It’s all crowned by an octagonal cupola that offers a commanding 360-degree view of the city huddled on the Mississippi’s banks. The yeshiva attempted to sell and demolish the mansion in the late 1970s, prompting a heated dispute with local preservationists. The house was taken over in 1988 by another Jewish day school, Yeshiva Ketana, which restored the house in the 1990s.
