Napoleon House : In The French Quarter : New Orleans

It evolved over the years, and in 2015, the restaurant was purchased by the Brennan family, which runs it today. True, Girod was mayor in January 1815 when Lafitte helped defend the city against the British in the Battle of New Orleans, and so it’s possible the two Frenchmen felt a kinship. In 1815, in the lead-up to the Battle of New Orleans, Lafitte admitted in writing his desire to prove himself a loyal American, thus his reason for putting in with Andrew Jackson. Thus, the story of Napoleon House, one of the most beloved, most repeated and most unverifiable stories in the city. Tucked away on the corner of Rue St. Louis and Rue Chartres deep in the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans lies a bar with a peculiar history. Legend has it that the boat sent to fetch Napoleon was a week out at sea when the news arrived that Bonaparte had died… depriving the Vieux Carre the opportunity to have the Little Corsican walk its famous cobbled streets. The Times-Picayune is marking the tricentennial of New Orleans with its ongoing 300 for 300 project, running through 2018 and highlighting the moments and people that connect and inspire us. Today, the series continues with the 1821 plan to spirit the then-exiled Napoleon Bonaparte to New Orleans. Our favorite places to drink cocktails, dance, and have a great night in New Orleans. She paired it with a Claire Pettibone custom version of her Boho Juliet veil with pale grey silk ribbons and lace flowers.

The landmark was once home to New Orleans mayor Nicholas Girod, who offered Napoleon Bonaparte refuge during the French leader’s exile. Its patrons can still expect a soundtrack of classicalmusic and the best muffulettas in town, as well as the same warm welcome first inspiredby Napoleon, and practiced here ever since. Owned by the Impastato family since 1914, today the Napoleon House is a bar and restaurant full of 18th century charm. Portraits of Napoleon decorate the walls, and the only music played is classical, imparting on the bar a faded grandeur that can only be found in that most magical of cities, New Orleans. In 2015, Ralph Brennan, whose family is a longstanding institution of New Orleans hospitality, accepted stewardship of Napoleon House from the Impastato family [its owners for the previous century,] declaring his intention to maintain its relaxed and antiquated character.

Muffuletta is the quintessential New Orleans sandwich and a Napoleon House signature that pays homage to the Italian immigrants who first opened grocery and deli stores along the riverfront of the French Market in New Orleans. It is a hearty sandwich of cured meats and cheese, slathered with a tangy olive salad dressing piled onto a sesame-crusted Italian loaf. That grocery was first rented and then purchased by Joseph Impastato, who in 1920 opened a tavern in a side room.

In keeping the tradition alive, almost a century later, opera and classical music is played at Napoleon House. Napoleon House, located in the French Quarter of New Orleans, boasts a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. Built in 1797, the building originally served as the residence of Nicholas Girod, the then-mayor of New Orleans. The property earned its name from the mayor's offer, in 1821, to provide refuge to Napoleon Bonaparte during his exile. Originally built in 1797 as the home of New Orleans mayor Nicholas Giroud, the building received its name due to a bizarre plot conceived in the 1820s to spring Napoleon Bonaparte from his exile on the island of Saint Helena.

According to People, the lovebirds invited 76 guests for a three-day wedding extravaganza, which kicked off with a welcome cocktail party followed by a ghost tour in the French Quarter. The Napoleon House was the couple's ideal wedding ceremony location because of its rustic European aesthetic, Hendricks said. She added that  the couple  fell in love with the historic venue's old charm, from the dilapidated walls to the grand dining rooms. Thetraditional taste of Napoleon House is safe in the hands of chef Chris Montero, a veteran of the RalphBrennan Restaurant Group, whose own Creole roots in New Orleans reach backabout as far as Napoleon House, itself.

Beyond this signature delight, the menu features a delectable array of Creole and Cajun-inspired dishes, from Seafood Gumbo to flavorful Red Beans and Rice and Jambalaya. According to legend, it was built by former Mayor Nicholas Girod, who offered it as a refuge for an exiled Napoleon Bonaparte. Known for its rumored connection to the infamous Napoleon Bonaparte, Napoleon House originally started life as the home and business of Nicolas Girod. Girod served as mayor of New Orleans but is more famously known for his role in the Battle of New Orleans.

Nicholas Girod did not have any children but his extended family lived in the house through the nineteenth century. In the early 1900's the property was owned by a few different people and it eventually became a grocery store. Nicholas Girod, left, a wealthy merchant and former mayor of New Orleans, was part of a plot in 1821 to rescue Napoleon Bonaparte from his exile on St. Helena and bring him to the city.

He even offered his home at 500 Chartres Street as a residence for Bonaparte. The couple's reception featured a multi-course sit-down dinner in lieu of a buffet. "People really love to do a buffet in New Orleans for weddings. We're just not really buffet people. I want to sit there and be lazy and have someone bringing [the food]," she tells PEOPLE. "So we did a sit-down dinner. We coursed it out and offered good, Southern New Orleans food."

Over the years, the property transitioned from a residence to a variety of commercial uses. In 1914, it was purchased by the Impastato family, and under the ownership of J. Impastato, affectionately known as Uncle Joe, the building evolved into the iconic Napoleon House restaurant and bar. "Uncle Joe," as they called him, felt the need to create some ambiance in the store, and brought down his Victrola to play some opera records for the customers.

The actress, who says she was determined to be "overdressed and fabulous" all weekend long, wore a custom Christian Siriano gown for the welcome party, accessorized with antique jewelry, for the occasion. "That's how I've always wanted to traipse the streets of New Orleans at night — in a serious gown with a drink in hand, just walking around," she explains. Perhaps most striking is its hipped roof, interrupted by four dormers on its Chartres Street side and one more centered on the shorter St. Louis Street side.

There is no proof that the story is true, but it lends a mystique (and decorative theme) to the site, which has been known as “Napoleon’s House” since 1823. Attached to a two-story structure his brother had built, Girod’s new building stood three stories. With plain walls of stuccoed brick, it lacks the classical molding and other ornamentation popular at the time. The showiest elements on its façade are shallow, second-floor balconies, which boast modest wrought-iron railings. Whether you’re visiting for the Napoleonic history, the tales of the Impastato family, or a dinner of muffuletta and their famous Pimm’s cup, Napoleon House is a slice of history worth exploring in New Orleans’ French Quarter. The couple chose the historic Napoleon House as their venue for the romantic ceremony.

A 200-year-old building in the French Quarter that was to be Napoleon's home in the New World.

[1] Sometime around the end of Prohibition they changed the establishment's name to "Napoleon House." Through the years the property has been owned by a few different members of the Impastato family and remained in the family until 2015 when it was purchased by restaurateur Ralph Brennan. Napoleon House continues to be one of the most famous bars in the nation. When the property was purchased by New Orleans restauranteurRalph Brennan in 2015, he purposefully preserved the bar in place and kept muchof the Impastato flair in the restaurant. The family portraits hang on the walland the only music played in the restaurant is opera or classical, just as UncleJoe would have done. According to the website for the Napoleon House restaurant — which occupies the first floor and is famous in its own right for its Pimm’s Cup cocktail and its warm muffuletta sandwich — it was in 1814 that Girod first offered his house as a refuge for Napoleon.

Girod was instrumental in aiding General Andrew Jackson with raising a local militia (including the renowned pirate Jean Lafitte), providing military supplies, and mitigating internal plots. If you’ve ever wondered what visiting the Haunted Mansion would be like if they poured a mean brandy milk punch, head to Napoleon House. This French Quarter landmark is over two centuries old and looks every year of it, with peeling paint, creaky wooden furniture, and lots of old portraits with eyes that follow you around the room. The kitchen here serves decent Creole staples, but we come here just for drinks—the no-nonsense, bowtied staff make some of the best classic cocktails around.

Its patrons can still expect a soundtrack of classical music and the best muffulettas in town, as well as the same warm welcome first inspired by Napoleon, and practiced here ever since. After Girod resigned as mayor in September 1815, he took over the existing estate at Chartres and St. Louis, building it into the three-and-a-half story Creole cottage, complete with a cupola. The structure functioned as both a home and store (on the ground level) and remained in Girod’s family until the end of the 19th century.

A handful of famous artists attended the wedding, including "Mad Men" creator Matt Weiner and actress Mae Whitman. Shirley Manson, the lead singer of Garbage and a close friend of Hendricks, also attended to officiate the wedding. On top of that, by 1821 — the year the plot was ostensibly set into motion — Lafitte had vamoosed, trading New Orleans for Galveston, Texas. It wasn’t until 1821 that the plot allegedly hatched seven years earlier was finally set into motion, according to most versions. Napoleon abdicated in April 1814 — the very same month of Girod’s inheritance — although he wasn’t shipped to St. Helena then. Back then, Napoleon was imprisoned on the remote island of St. Helena, but, the story goes, a group of sympathetic Frenchmen hatched a plan to rescue him — with help from some amenable pirates — and deliver him to New Orleans to live out his golden years.

On September 4th, one year into his second term, Girod resigned as Mayor due to financial troubles. The people of New Orleans then learned that Napoleon escaped the island of Elba on March 1, 1815, but was recaptured and sent to Ste. Before the Grod and the other Napoleon supporters could execute their supposed plot, Bonaparte died in captivity on May 5, 1821.

The actress' close friend Shirley Manson, lead singer of the '90s music group Garbage, officiated. The dedicated team at Napoleon House in New Orleans embodies a passion for preserving the establishment's rich history and creating an unparalleled experience for patrons. It changed hands repeatedly over the years, with its ground floor becoming home to an Italian grocery just after the turn of the 20th century. The plot was hatched In 1821, with one of the conspirators being the infamous Louisiana pirate, Jean Lafitte.

It’s all crowned by an octagonal cupola that offers a commanding 360-degree view of the city huddled on the Mississippi’s banks. The historic Napoleon House on Chartres Street in New Orleans, shown in 2018, was once intended as a refuge for exiled French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Much of the site's history is preserved in place—including in the cupola which overlooks the French Quarter. A popular New Orleans legend suggests that once Mayor Girod and a few other Bonaparte supporters heard about the exile they devised a plot to rescue the Emperor. It is believed that Jean Lafitte, Captain St. Ange Bossiere, and Dominique You were all involved in the plot. The plan was to rescue Napoleon from his exile and bring him to New Orleans to live out his remaining years at the Girod Home.

We’re not sure how the Pimm’s Cup got to be their house specialty (surely there’s a story), but whatever you do, don’t leave without trying the absinthe-dabbed Sazerac. Uncle Joe Impastato, the visionary founder of Napoleon House, had a discerning palate that leaned away from potent alcoholic beverages. Acquainted with Pimm's Cup during his travels in England—a refreshing, low-alcohol libation perfect for summer—he introduced it to Napoleon House. As a trailblazer, Napoleon House proudly became the first establishment in America to offer Pimm's Cups, surpassing global sales records, second only to the historic London bar that birthed this iconic drink. "We wanted [our friends and family] to feel sexy and welcomed and love and laugh, and have delicious food and indulge and enjoy incredible music. And we wanted to say, 'And hey, if you stick around, it'll continue to be like this. Come to our house. We'll do more of this,' " she explains.

In April 1814, Mayor Nicolas Girod was serving his first term as mayor of New Orleans when his brother, Clause Francois, died and left him a lot on the corner of Chartres and St. Louis Streets. When he received this plot, he began to build a grand home, a three-and-a-half story townhouse with room for a business and residence. Owned and operated by the Impastato family since 1914 and Ralph Brennan since May of 2015, Napoleon House suspends you in time. Listen to Beethoven's Eroiqua, which he composed for Napoleon, and the music of other classical masters, while sipping a Pimm's Cup, and basking in an ambiance that could only be New Orleans. The following day, Hendricks and Bianchini — who got engaged in February 2023 after proposing to each other — exchanged handwritten vows at a ceremony held at Napoleon House, a century-old restaurant that remains a New Orleans landmark.

As one of nine National Historic Landmarks in the French Quarter, the Napoleon House has undergone its fair share of renovations (which will include a restored stairwell in the near future), but it retains the charm that has endeared people to the building since 1815. Our favorite places to eat in the land of above-ground cemeteries and excellent Creole food.

Abeloved landmark on the corner of Chartres and St. Louis in New Orleans' FrenchQuarter, the Napoleon House exudes aEuropean charm in keeping with its 200-year history. Remaining trueto itself, the deeply patinated walls, uneven tile floors, and old wooden bar, hollowed by countless signature Pimm's Cups, speak to its many decades ofservice. He ran a grocery store on the bottom floor while living with his brothers and sisters in the upstairs quarters. Along with the grocery store, Joseph opened a tavern, which seemed to be favorable to the river workers and local businessmen, serving drinks and playing opera and classical music from his Victrola.

The guest list included ”Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner, Retta, Mae Whitman and Christian Siriano, who designed the actress’ pre-wedding cocktail dress. Hendricks told the outlet that she and Bianchini – who first met on the set of her TV show “Good Girls” – chose the Big Easy as they share a special connection to the city. Ralph Brennan recognizes team members each year at our annual holiday party with bonus checks honoring tenure and outstanding contributions. A ghost tour was one of the celebratory events guests could partake in after a cocktail party at the Soniat House property, a luxury hotel located on Chartres Street.

The event kicked off with a welcome party on Friday, April 19, hosted at a mini mansion on the Soniat House hotel property, which was recently redecorated by renowned interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard. Guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres before stepping out into the historic streets of the French Quarter for a ghost tour. Owned and operated by the Impastato family since 1914 and Ralph Brennan since May of 2015, Napoleon House is a place that suspends you in time. You can hear Beethoven's Eroiqua, which he composed for Napoleon, and the music of other classical masters, while sipping a Pimm's Cup, and basking in an ambiance that could only be New Orleans. Renowned for its iconic Warm Muffuletta (most serve theirs cold), a symphony of cured meats, tangy olive salad, and sesame-studded bread, all made in house, the establishment pays homage to the city's vibrant flavors.

The plan was to help the deposed emperor escape and bring him to the New World, and the first floor of the building was set aside to be his home. After the Civil War, the French Quarter fell into disarray and later became a home for Italian and Irish immigrants. In the second century of its life, the house at the corner of Chartres and St. Louis was rented and later owned by the Impastato family. The ground floor was a grocery, later a bar (even during Prohibition) and then a restaurant, while the family lived upstairs. Joseph “Uncle Joe” Impastato, who originally rented the property in 1914 before purchasing it in 1920, was an Italian immigrant who had a love for family, food, and opera.

The property is rated among the highest historically significant locations in New Orleans, and is on the National Register of historic buildings. Hendricks says she and Bianchini — whom she first met on the set of her series Good Girls, which ran from 2018 to 2021 — wanted their wedding to be a big celebration of their love and a fun and memorable experience for their guests. It’s not difficult to see that the home has been painstakingly restored and preserved over the years, with every room making you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time to the 1800s. Located at 3711 St Charles Avenue, Anne’s former 5-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom New Orleans Garden District home is estimated to be worth $4.6 million as of 2022! The author reportedly purchased the mansion in 1989 and lived here until 2004.

The Rice family decided to move to the Ansonia Hotel in 1907 and sold it to the tobacconist Solomon Schinasi, whose family modified the house in 1908, 1912, and 1927. The Schinasi family lived there until around 1945, after which the Heckscher Foundation for Children leased it. The yeshiva attempted to sell and demolish the mansion in the late 1970s, prompting a heated dispute with local preservationists. The house was taken over in 1988 by another Jewish day school, Yeshiva Ketana, which restored the house in the 1990s.

The residence was built in 1857 and it was purchased by the Rice family in 1989. On a covered porch, the vintage Arne Norell leather love seats and the ironwood block tables are from JF Chen, the wall sculpture is a wartime gas mask for horses, and the walls are painted in Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe. This layout increases the privacy of all family members by providing plenty of separation between the rooms. However, people with mobility issues will have a hard time going up and down the stairs.

Shabby chic was popularized as a distinct style by interior designer Rachel Ashwell when she founded home furnishings company “Shabby Chic” in the 1980s. StartBuild's estimator accounts for the house plan, location, and building materials you choose, with current market costs for labor and materials. Once you approve the quote and submit payment, your designer will get to work implementing the changes you requested on your house plan. Though this sink area boasts a decidedly modern aesthetic, there are many French country-inspired details throughout the space. White painted bricks and stone tile floors set the country chic scene in this kitchen.

How Much Do These Designs Cost?

Interior French doors are a bucket list item as far as chateau-inspired decor goes. In this grand living room by Romanek Design Studio, the pared-back design set against the backdrop of a classic, ornate architectural canvas represents a modern take on classic French country decorating. Rather than a stark white, designer Meta Coleman painted this pantry a buttery yellow to complement the warm-toned hardwood floors. Combined with the other two primary colors, this simple palette yields a space that is anything but.

French Country Plan

The floating shelves and bright emerald green accents and blond flooring anchor the living room in the modern era while the raw materials of the mantel and exposed beams stay true to its history. Exposed ceiling beams, distressed wood floors, colorful textiles, and antique paintings and trays on display create a truly charming dining nook. The gorgeous, large-scale antique lighting in this foyer really sets the tone for the rest of the home.

The point of these schemes is to attract buyers and help reverse shrinking populations. Towns in Italy have done it several times and now a small town in France is taking a second run at their own $1 home program. For real wine lovers, a visit to the town of Saint-Émilion is a must - and just a short 20-minute walk from the property. All guests at the château will experience spectacular views of the Dordogne Valley and are offered the chance to learn about the estate on an exclusive vineyard tour, followed by a wine tasting. Once the home of Albert Christophle, the founding father of Bagnoles and architect of the iconic town, it recently got a Scandi-inspired update.

Here's a look at Gates' many homes, along with details about transfers around the Gates divorce. Neither Gates nor French Gates responded to requests for comment from Business Insider. Over three decades, he and his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, spent more than $150 million on their current real estate portfolio. Following their 2021 divorce, a number of the properties were transferred from one trust to another — so it's hard to discern who owns exactly what, as all of their trusts are linked to the same Seattle bank. The first was in 2021, and over 90 people applied, Blondieau told Ouest France.

They were left unglazed to allow moss to grow, another detail that adds to the overall pastoral look. The main house, guest cottage, and garage are all clustered around a courtyard and garden. This Southern California home showcases French Country style, starting with a circa 1670 stone front door surround. The grounds are overflowing with espaliered apple trees, olive groves, and drifts of lavender.

Brick, stone and/or stucco wall siding are most often seen with decorative half-timbering. Built in Federal style in the 19th century, this early American home was heavily influenced by French architecture. The home boasts French blue shutters, tall windows capped with window lintels, and cozy dormers on its uppermost level.

Modern French country home design applies the traditional elements of European architecture in fresh ways. This elegant multi-level house, for example, features the stone and stucco facade, sloped roof, and ornate details that are classic of the style. But black trim, windows, and doors give the home a crisp, modern edge. The French country-style interiors are as charming and delightful as the exteriors. In the kitchens, you'll find herringbone patterned floors, painted cabinets, and worn worktables that bring to mind a well-used family space.

They’re effortless with their stone facades and stucco walls, rustic green gardens, and cozy interiors filled with exposed beams and a roaring fireplace. French country homes are a well-loved house style that you’ll find throughout the US – and there’s no need to move to France just to live in one. From small cottages to estate-worthy chateaux, French country house designs have both asymmetrical and symmetrical exteriors. Homes with the French country style include key common characteristics. French country architecture and decor have experienced many surges in popularity, and they continue to inspire homebuilders and interior decorators today. In fact, French country style's distressed woods, neutral color palettes, and farmhouse inspiration align with today's popular modern farmhouse decorating trends.

Whether you are in Normandy’s countryside or on the island of Corsica, their homes never fail to catch your eye. They have complex architecture with attractive aesthetics and this style has been increasing in popularity worldwide. The main difference between shabby chic and French country is that shabby chic is characterized by a rustic, bohemian feel, whereas French country focuses on elegant and refined touches. Studio Razavi gave this historic home in Lyon, France, some modern updates while still honoring the integrity of the space.

If you don’t want to stumble when you’re getting your coffee in the morning, look for a French country home that is built on one single level. Before you make a final decision on a French country home plan, there are several factors you need to keep in mind. Always check for the specific details and make sure the layout fits all your needs. Because there are too many features included in these designs, we will mention the most important ones.

There is nothing quite like the French countryside in the spring and summertime. For example, mix beautifully worn pieces with elegant toile fabrics, and glints of precious metals with worn and faded tapestries. You’ll find that prints such as gingham, small florals, plaid, checks, and stripes are plentiful in the French country decor style. Colors of this style can be found on the warm side of the color wheel with hues that have medium to low intensity. To fully embrace French country design's signature coziness, you need ample seating.

There are two more bedrooms in this house, with a 12’x14’ office that could act as the third one. Petrolheads will love the garages which give plenty of space to park four vehicles at the same time. As a result, you can find French country houses across the country, depending on where many veterans settled post-war. Like many home styles, the French country style has ebbed and flowed over the years. Today, the style has blended with some of the modern farmhouse-style interiors that have also become popular.

The mansard roof, which features four double-sloped sides, is characteristic of French country homes. The goal of capturing maximum light guided the design of this French country home inside and out. On the front of the house, tall, shuttered windows with 20 and 24 panes recall French doors. A majestic pecan tree and leafy pergola filter the light and soften high-summer harshness. With a mix of stone and stucco, this rambling chateau references the French country homes that inspired it. The steep mansard roofline and charming shutters are rooted in European style.

What to Expect When Using the STS Express Smoothing System

design essentials silk press

Whether it be rain, sweat, shower steam, or water at the pool – clients will experience reversion. The only way to prevent total reversion is with a relaxer – which the STS Express Smoothing System is not. The STS Express Smoothing System works for all textures – including natural hair types from 3c to 4c. Clients that shampoo often (1 time per week or more) will experience only a fraction of the longevity that the STS Express Smoothing System offers. The best way to make the treatment last is to have your client visit you at the salon every 2 weeks, so you can perform a maintenance service.

How does the STS Express Smoothing System work?

For clients with relaxed or damaged hair, swap the Smoothing Mousse in Step 2 for the Damage Recovery Anti-Breakage Treatment. It’s very important to share with your clients that the STS Express Smoothing System is not a relaxer or a Brazilian Keratin Treatment. Using the most up to date industrial machinery, our knowledgeable staff can match your favorite color or shade into any textile you desire. In this blog post, we will cover what the STS Express System is, how it works, and best practices for use.

Most importantly, we will share how to manage client expectations after receiving the STS Express Smoothing System.

Aftercare Using STS Express Smoothing Treatment

While some clients may opt to protectively style, others choose to take a “break” from their texture with straight hair styling. It is essential to remind clients that the STS Express Smoothing System is not a relaxer or Brazilian Keratin treatment. The results are not permanent, and as such, their hair will revert when it comes into contact with moisture.

DE Pro: Servicing Clients With Fine or Thin Hair – 4 Volumizing Tips

Regular STS Express Smoothing System treatments will be required if they wish to maintain a looser texture and style manageability. For clients with natural hair seeking improved manageability, apply the STS Express Smoothing System as directed. For clients that no longer wish to receive relaxer services, the STS System will make their transition a lot easier. At the line where the relaxed hair and new growth meet, the STS System will loosen and help blend texture. It will also provide protection against breakage, making the transition more manageable for your client. The STS Express Smoothing System is for clients with natural and transitioning hair, seeking improved texture manageability.

Managing Client Expectations

This treatment can be used in lieu of the Smoothing Mousse, depending on the condition of your client’s hair. Many factors go into how long a client’s hair will remain straight, and how long the STS Express Smoothing System will last in their hair. RY Silk & Textiles carries an extensive variety of fabrics to match your special ideal garment apparel. We provide our services and assistance to many clienteles ranging from well known apparel brands to unique private labels in Los Angeles.

Who is the STS Express Smoothing System for?

You can ensure your clients that their money is not wasted once they experience reversion. The  key benefit of the STS Express Smoothing System is long-term manageability. When your client’s hair does revert, their curls will be looser, softer, and easier to manage. This is because the STS Express Smoothing System gently stretches and softens the natural curl pattern, making it less resistant to heat styling. For clients with natural hair, remind them that the texture loosening effects of the system  last up to 12 weeks.

The system is not necessary for clients with relaxed hair, as they have already undergone chemical processing. In lieu of the Smoothing Mousse, use the Damage Recovery Anti-Breakage Treatment. As temperatures decline, many clients with natural and transitioning hair are searching for styling options that protect the hair and prolong wear.
